The design of the Aluminum group chairs came from Girard's lament to Charles Eames that there was no well designed outdoor furniture when he was working with Eero Saarinen on the creation of the Miller house in Columbus, Indiana.
The subsequent design by Charles and Ray Eames was made of aluminum with a mesh fabric sling to withstand the elements. However, it soon became more popular for indoor use and was upholstered in fabrics, naugahyde and leather.
This terrific pair lounge chairs date to 1965, are upholstered in a purple Alexander Girard naugahyde and are in good original condition.
